How to Prepare for Year-end Review Conversations
As an executive or individual contributor, it’s important for you to showcase the accomplishments of your team or your accomplishments to your C-suite or to your immediate leader. Show how you truly shined this year, grab a pen & paper, Google Sheet, or Notes app open and ready:
- 1. Find your company’s yearly goals
- Every company should have yearly goals and tenets that represent what the business is striving toward
- Example: Company X’s goal was to double diverse clientele representation or Company Y wanted to retain 25% of their users to our content.
- Every company should have yearly goals and tenets that represent what the business is striving toward
- 2. Align accomplishments with the overall business goals
- Write down how your department helped contribute to the overall goal this year.
- Whether directly or indirectly, write down examples
- Example: The department(s) for Company X were responsible for marketing and promotional materials to attract new diverse and inclusive clienteles for long-term strategic initiatives. Or The department for Company Y was responsible for creating an experience that kept users on our content
- 3. Brainstorm tactics used to inform strategic initiatives
- How did you help internal or external departments or individuals achieve the strategic goals?
- Example: Company X’s department strategy to gain reach for diverse and inclusive clientele included creating personas of the clientele we wanted to engage for category support, we also reached out to engage the companies. Company Y’s department strategy was to develop engaging tools to keep users on our content.
- How did you help internal or external departments or individuals achieve the strategic goals?
- 4. Prioritize 3-4 of the accomplishments
- What were the overall strategies?
- (see examples above)
- What were the tactics used for the strategies?
- Example: As a member of the A team at Company X, I was responsible for building relationships with new diverse and inclusive clientele, including outreach about our new categories and product offerings, I reached out to 20 people and have successfully on-boarded 12 new clientele. Last year we had a roster of 4 diverse and inclusive clients, now we have 12. I have helped support the overall business by tripling our clients and a 60% successful client acquisition rate. Or As a member of the B team at Company Y, I was responsible for creating copy and working with the product team to implement pop-up banners to keep users on our content. After testing and iterating, I successfully ( or the team I was on) found the winning combination that kept 50% of users on the content. The team decided to carry the experiment to more content, leading to an overall to retention of 43% across three content categories.
- What were the overall strategies?
At this point you have all the elements combined to prepare for your year-end conversation. To recap, you have the goals for the Company, Department, and Leadership, the strategies that align to the accomplishments of the goals, and your individual or team contributions and the impact to the overall goals. Good Luck!
